Teaching Strategies to Promote Equity in the Classroom OnDemand
How important is the affirmation and validation of one’s culture to learning? As it turns out, it is vitally important and requires a deep understanding and integration of strategies that address the relationship between culture, language, and neuroscience. June Lucas Zillich, Ed.S., Certified Bilingual School Teacher and Psychologist, and former administrator with 30 years’ experience, reveals the essential link between culture, language, and academic success for students. Zillich explains how the integration of neuroscience, culture, and linguistic practices can help break the achievement gap that exists for marginalized students. Zillich provides teachers with information, specific examples of Cultural and Linguistically Response Practices and the Strength-based Ecological Approach and wraps these understandings in current mindfulness practices. Specifically, she addresses the value of attunement, the development of bonded, supportive relationships that affirm and validate students, their language, and their culture, shown to be integral to their success. Finally, Zillich provides a wide array of resources to help teachers develop the tools and understandings necessary for building equitable classrooms. If you truly want to create an equitable classroom that supports all students, this course will be instrumental to that goal.
