Closing the Achievement Gap OnDemand
How can students learn and be successful in school and beyond if they are not in class? Dr. Yadira Flores, Certified School Psychologist and Co-founder of KOI-Education, provides a deep understanding of the impact of culture on schools, definitions of human behavior, and data that clearly illustrates how minority cultures are disproportionately penalized by school systems (based on U.S. Department of Justice statistics). Dr. Flores details how culturally subjective systems result in damaging exclusion from the classroom and resulting gaps in academic achievement, higher drop-out rates, higher juvenile delinquency rates, and more negative consequences for minority students. Flores walks participants through tools to create awareness, providing specific data-driven action steps supported by recommendations of the U.S. Department of Justice to create evidence-based school systems that are positive, predictable, and equitable. Participants are asked to reflect on how they can create awareness and move forward to create greater equity in their schools and begin to erase current achievement gaps.
