Event Summary

As a follow-up, and for those of you who weren’t able to attend our webinar, here are the links and some follow-up reflection questions from our conversation.

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, a time to remember that bullying is still a prevalent issue that is too often overlooked in schools - and a time to take action! A recent court case (September 2023) by the US DOE Office Of Civil Rights (OCR) determined that the Allegheny Valley School District in Pennsylvania “subjected a student with a disability to harassment so pervasive that it constituted a hostile environment and that the district failed to take necessary steps to protect the student and end the harassment”.

The webinar opened with a thought-provoking visual illustrating using a lit candle as an analogy for the role of the bystander in bullying situations. We then took a look at two evidence-based bullying prevention programs taught in KOI Education’s PBIS Tier 2 Manual (available in paperback or digital versions from Amazon and Applebooks). One prevention program is focused on Elementary Schools and relies on an easily taught “Stop-Walk-Talk” intervention. Lesson plans are available to teach student how to use this system as well as how to respond when someone asks them to stop. The Middle/High School version uses an Expect Respect theme but also explicitly teaches students how to respond to disrespect as well as how to respond if another student asks them to stop. These curriculums are both free and available from the National Center on PBIS or from KOI Education’s resource page.
