Pew Research study of Biggest Student-related Issues Facing Teachers this School Year

Student Behavior Tops the List

A Pew Research Center’s article on the challenges teachers face in America today highlights significant concerns related to student behavior problems and mental health.

Teachers report an increase in behavior issues, with many feeling unprepared to manage these challenges effectively. The pandemic exacerbated these problems, leading to higher rates of absenteeism and disengagement among students, which in turn has affected their academic performance and mental well-being. Additionally, the mental health crisis among students is a growing concern. Teachers are increasingly dealing with students who struggle with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. This has added pressure on educators to support students beyond their academic needs, often without adequate resources or training.

To address these issues, educators are advocating for more mental health support in schools, better training for handling behavior problems, and policies that prioritize student well-being. These changes are essential to creating a more supportive and effective learning environment.

Teacher Stress and Burnout

Educators are exhausted. There is no one cause or one solution. But lack of parent support, due in part to a divisive political climate that often targets educators as a ‘indoctrinating students’ by teaching critical thinking skills, is part of the equation for some educators. Here are some key facts identified in the Pew Research survey:

  • 68% say student behavior problems disrupt the learning environment

  • 58% report their job is always or often stressful

  • 57% of teachers report a rise in student behavior issues post-pandemic

  • 30% are considering leaving due to stress at school

Student mental health is also seen as contributing to the stress and burnout among educators. Over half of educators surveys, 53%, report an increase in student mental health concerns. But only about a third, 38% of teachers, feel they have adequate support for addressing mental health issues.

Rising Stress Among Teachers

Hope

If there is hope or a silver lining in the surveys, it is this:

  • 78% of teachers emphasize the importance of building strong relationships with students

  • 67% of teachers believe strong relationships improve student engagement

What Works?

High-quality professional development training is essential for equipping teachers with effective strategies to manage classroom behavior and enhance student achievement. By focusing on research-based practices and collaborative approaches, these training sessions empower educators to create positive learning environments, thereby reducing behavior-related issues. When teachers are well-prepared and confident in their skills, they can foster stronger relationships with students, promote engagement, and tailor their instruction to meet diverse needs. Consequently, this comprehensive support not only enhances teacher effectiveness but also leads to improved academic outcomes, creating a more conducive atmosphere for learning.
