PBIS and Native American Students

We've been fortunate to have been asked to serve Native American communities in Arizona. This year we are working with students from the Hualapai and Navajo tribes. In all trainings, Native cultures, values, and traditions are taken into consideration from the start. One of the great strengths of implementing a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) systems in any school is that it is culturally responsive. That means that it does not seek to oppress any existing positive characteristics of a school, but rather, it embraces the culture of the community. And we are proud to help schools bring this responsive system to their schools to support student academic and behavioral growth.Currently, the research base for PBIS in Native American communities is rather weak. But as we work in these communities and partner with parents, community members, tribal chapter houses, and elders, we hope to contribute to the research community. America is richer for our diversity, and we continue to grow everyday by embracing our multicultural heritage.
