Reinforcing Understanding of Trauma Informed Practices

Consider the total number of children in your school and in your classroom. Next, consider that statistics show that 45% of children have experienced one traumatic event before they reach the age of 18 and, further, that in Arizona (as well as four other states), one in seven children has experienced three or more traumatic events before turning 18. And for LGBQT children, double those figures. These children are sitting in our classrooms with a whole range of physical, mental, emotional, and psychological effects that impact them and often play out as undesirable or disruptive behaviors. Do you know who they are and how to help them? Are you aware of the signs and symptoms?

Debi Neat, M.Ed, a 34-year experienced educator working extensively in Crisis Intervention and Prevention, leads this deeply informative look into the definition, types, signs, symptoms, and impacts of trauma on learning, behavior, and relationships. Using the 4 Rs - Realize, Recognize, Respond, and Resist, Neat teaches us how to reframe our perceptions of our students’ behaviors and to use self care and self regulation to create classrooms that are stable, consistent, and safe for students to enter and remain in learning mode. In addition to referencing the value of multi-tiered behavioral systems like KOI’s PBIS, she also provides a comprehensive list of strategies that not only regulate our classrooms, but also help us build relationships vital to our students’ well being and our own.
