Basics of Suicide Prevention

Youth suicide is a growing problem both in Arizona and nationally, with 64 Arizona Youth committing suicide in 2018, the most recently reported year. Debi Neat, M.Ed, CTS, is a Certified Trauma Specialist who has twenty years’ work as a Crisis Responder working directly on school campuses and is a Youth Mental Health First Aid Suicide Prevention Trainer. In this training, Neat presents the basics of suicide prevention, including a look at state and national statistics, and provides insights into how children and adolescents’ brains handle stress differently than adults. To better equip educators and other adults with awareness, Neat provides specific behavior indicators, stressors, risk factors, and warning signs. Equally important, Neat provides specific protective factors, detailing how to build connection and resilience in youth, and how to not only approach children who might be at risk, but also to identify protocols for reporting and a variety of resources for assisting them. Finally, acknowledging the important role that teachers and caring adults have in preventing youth suicide, Neat prompts us to Brighten Up, Build Up, Light Up, and Never Give Up on our youth.
